ABOUT HENRY

Henry Thuss (b. March 5, 2004, Pasadena, CA) is an Audio Engineer and Sound Production Major at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He is a recording engineer, mixing artist, and a musician. Henry started playing clarinet in third grade, picking up french horn, trumpet, and mellophone by the age of 15. Henry started working in the recording arts at age 16. He has been studying french horn with Annie Bosler and Dylan Skye Hart since ninth grade, while also studying trumpet with James Myers. He has been a mentee in audio engineering and music production under the guidance of his high school band director Jason Stone, Colburn Academy teacher Brian Langsbard, and television composer Matt Koskenmaki. 

 

As an audio engineer, Henry has had the opportunity to work with members of the LA Philharmonic Orchestra, LA Chamber Orchestra, with wind ensembles, chamber choirs, and instruments from the violin to the baroque bassoon. In 2020, Henry launched the La Cañada High School (LCHS) Instrumental Program YouTube channel where he assembled virtual concerts for many of the ensembles on campus. Henry has had the chance to mix film scores for directors and composers at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts and UCLA. In addition to recording, Henry has also led video production for multiple concerts and events, bringing high quality recordings to those all around the world. Henry is a board member of the Indiana University Audio Engineering Society chapter and a member of WIUX, the student run radio station on campus.

 

As a musician, Henry has led many ensembles and performed with many prestigious groups. Throughout high school, Henry gained experience playing french horn, trumpet, and mellophone in many different types of music including concert band music, jazz, musicals, and classical music. Henry has also composed multiple pieces and arranged music for a variety of ensembles ranging from small quartets to full symphonic orchestras, garnering hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube. In addition, Henry has had the pleasure to lead wind ensembles, orchestras, and smaller groups in rehearsals and conduct in concert. In 2020, Henry was accepted into the Pacific Crest Drum and Bugle Corps but the season was canceled due to COVID. From 2021 to 2022, Henry served as the LCHS marching band’s Drum Major during a season where he led them to a recent record high score and three first place trophies in one of their most successful seasons to date. During the same school year, Henry marched with the Pasadena City College Tournament of Roses Honor Band in the 133rd Rose Parade. He was one of seven mellophones accepted into the distinguished group. In March, Henry and the LCHS Concert Band performed in New York City's Carnegie Hall. In June, Henry had the opportunity to perform a concert with legendary Hollywood french horn player Jim Thatcher.
